Saudi-led coalition bombs airport runway in Yemen's capital

Yemenis battle the world’s worst cholera attack ever Twitter

The Saudi-led military coalition fighting Yemen's Houthi rebels last week announced it had closed all air, land and seaports in Yemen to stem what it said was the flow of arms to the Houthis from Iran.

Hedile noted the first flight carrying 218 passengers took off today.

Last week, the Saudi-led coalition said it was closing Yemen's ground, air and sea ports after a ballistic missile was sacked over the Saudi capital from Yemen.

On Monday, the coalition said it would reopen ports in areas held by allied forces and loosen restrictions it had raised after the firing of the missile, which was intercepted near Riyadh's global airport.

With the humanitarian situation getting much worse, it appears 2018 will be hard for Yemen as this historical land is plagued with war and disease for another year.

Al-Mouallimi said the Saudi-led coalition wants tougher inspections at the port of Hodeida, which is controlled by Houthi Shiite rebels, because current United Nations -monitored inspections only check large ships, and "in the case of small and medium-size ships there is hardly any inspection that takes place in the port or anywhere else".

Since then, Yemen has suffered devastating and indiscriminate airstrikes launched by a Saudi-led coalition to restore Hadi to power.

However, Mr McGoldrick said there was "no indication" yet of the blockade being lifted. For ports in rebel-held or disputed territories, such as the city of Hodeida, the mission said it has asked the U.N.to send a team of experts to discuss ways to make sure weapons can't be smuggled in.

But the military intervention, which has triggered widespread criticism from the global community, has left more than 10,000 people, most of which civilians, dead.

Aden port, which is controlled by allies of Saudi Arabia, does not have the capacity to handle the necessary volume of humanitarian cargo, he added.

Saleh al-Sammad, the head of the Presidency Council of Yemen's rebels, also known as Houthis, told a rally of thousands of supporters marching down a main boulevard in the capital, Sanaa, that the coalition has "shut down all doors for peace and dialogue".

Initially, the ports Aden, Mocha, and Makulla will be opened as they are in areas under Yemen's internationally recognized government.
