Sandy Hook families seek to hold gun maker liable for shooting

Connecticut Supreme Court hears arguments in Newtown shooting case

The families of nine Sandy Hook victims and one teacher who survived the deadly mass shooting presented their case to Connecticut Supreme Court justices Tuesday in their lawsuit against Remington, maker of the AR-15 weapon used by Adam Lanza to kill 20 children and six adults in 2012, the Hartford Courant reports.

The plaintiffs argued the law does not protect Remington because it marketed the rifle "not for sport or for target shooting or self-defense" but "for exactly what it was", Koskoff said.

Josh Koskoff, who is representing the Sandy Hook families, argued that Remington Arms had been courting gunman Adam Lanza for years prior to the shooting through specific advertising, particularly in video games such as Call of Duty. He got it for his 18th birthday ... remember he was 14 years old when they started this marketing plan. "The courtship between Remington and Adam Lanza is at the heart of this case".

Almost five years after 26 people were gunned down in a CT elementary school, one Sandy Hook father says the victims' families have "not lost one ounce of confidence" in their case and they hope to reinstate their lawsuit against the parent company of the AR-15 used in the attack. Several groups, including the National Rifle Association and emergency room doctors, submitted briefs to the court. Opponents say easy access to guns is to blame for continued mass shootings in the US, including the October 1 massacre of 58 people at a concert in Las Vegas and the slaughter just a month later of 26 people in a Texas church.

David Studdert, a Stanford law professor, said on Monday he thought negligent entrustment was a tough argument for the families to make because it has traditionally involved someone having direct knowledge that another person poses a risk. The weapon was made by Bushmaster, which is owned by Remington Arms Co.

Bank of England reveals last day to use old £10 notes
The shiny new tenner was unveiled to the public at Winchester Cathedral - where the Austen was buried - back in July. Old notes can still be spent ahead of this date and you can exchange them at the Bank once this point has passed.

"Remington may never have known Adam Lanza but they had been courting him for years", Koskoff said. "This action falls squarely within the broad immunity provided by PLCAA". Lanza also killed his mother before the school shooting.

In dismissing the suit last October, a judge cited federal law protecting gun manufacturers from litigation if their products are used during a crime.

While Koskoff has repeatedly said negligent entrustment is a factor in the case, Vogts argued Remington was too far removed for a negligent entrustment claim.

Assault weapons were banned in CT after the Sandy Hook shooting.

The packed courtroom in Hartford, Connecticut, included numerous victims' family members. A federal ban on such weapons was passed in 2004 and expired a decade later. To see more, visit WNPR News.
