Myanmar Military Exoneration of Rohingya Crimes is 'Laughable,' 'Pathetic': HRW

Rohingya crisis: Newborns left to die on beach, according to UK report

Aung San Suu Kyi later met Tillerson briefly, though the two will have a one-on-one conversation on Wednesday in Naypyidaw to discuss the situation in northern Rakhine and the restoration of peace and stability. "Those responsible for abuses must be held accountable", she said.

Some recruiters are Rohingya themselves, the United Nations report said, and have formed trafficking rings as the population has expanded in Bangladesh.

Contradicting the army report, several Rohingya who fled violence have already detailed accounts of mass killings, brutal beatings, torture and rape against Rohingya children, women, and men.

"Secretary Tillerson's visit must be used to recognize the tragedy for what it is, ethnic cleansing, and to pressure the Myanmar government and in particular Myanmar's military to address the crimes against humanity that are taking place", said Eric Schwartz, president of Refugees International, in a statement.

According to Reuters, the Myanmar military's internal probe said that according to 2,817 people interviewed from 54 Rohingya villages, the soldiers did not fire on "innocent villagers", rape or commit sexual violence against women.

Over 6,00,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled to Bangladesh from predominantly Buddhist Myanmar's Rakhine state since late August after large-scale violence.

Myanmar, however, is refusing entry to a United Nations panel that was tasked with investigating allegations of abuses after a smaller military counteroffensive launched in October 2016.

With US senators back in Washington pressing to impose economic sanctions and travel restrictions targeting the military and its business interests, Tillerson is expected to deliver a stern message to Myanmar's generals, while supporting the transition to democracy.

In his meeting with Myanmar's State Counselor, the UN Secretary-General highlighted the need for allowing the return of displaced Muslims who have fled to neighboring Bangladesh. However, in keeping with ASEAN's principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of one another, the issue appears to have been put aside at the summit.

On Monday, British Prime Minister Theresa May's spokesman stated that the crisis in Myanmar "looks like ethnic cleansing".

"And it is something for which the Burmese authorities - and especially the military - must take full responsibility".

The members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) issued a draft statement that failed to mention the Rohingya crisis in Myanmar's northern Rakhine state during the annual East Asia Summit in Manila, Reuters reported.

"I can not hide my deep concern with the dramatic movement of hundreds of thousands of refugees from Myanmar to Bangladesh".

"The military's grave crimes committed with impunity are exactly what the International Criminal Court was created for".

Dujarric said the number of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh has increased to 618,000 over the weekend.
