Class-action lawsuit filed against Tesla, claiming racial discrimination

Elon Musk

"In fairness, if someone is a jerk to you, but sincerely apologizes, it is important to be thick-skinned and accept that apology", Tesla's C.E.O wrote in an email.

Compounding matters for Tesla, a New Yorker piece on Monday featured a former female employee who said she didn't receive a promotion due to gender discrimination.

Tesla didn't respond to request for comment.

United States automaker Tesla Inc on Monday was hit with a class-action lawsuit claiming its California production plant is a 'hotbed for racist behavior'. The lawsuit followed another one in October, when three employees made similar claims against the company. Vaughn's employment was later terminated for "not having a positive attitude" after he complained to human resources about the issue.

Shares of Tesla closed down 2.1 percent on Tuesday afternoon following news of a civil rights lawsuit against the automakers.

According to The Washington Post, the lawsuit was filed on behalf of Marcus Vaughn, a former employee at the Fremont factory from April 23 to October 31, who alleged that employees and supervisors regularly used the N-word around him and other black colleagues.

Tesla doesn't do enough to stamp out the rampant racial discrimination at the electric vehicle's factories, according to a lawsuit several black employees filed Monday. The n-word was used against him "on a regular basis", and he witnessed the use of the slur toward other black employees, he claimed.

Other recent lawsuits filed against Tesla include claims that the company failed to give proper notice when laying off hundreds of workers, claims concerning anti-LGTBQ harassment, a complaint from a woman engineer alleging harassment, and a complaint from the National Labour Relations Board defending employee claims that Tesla attempted to suppress a unionization effort.

According to Monday's complaint, Musk sent an email to Tesla factory employees on May 31. "Sometimes these things happen unintentionally, in which case you should apologize".

Vaughn is seeking unspecified damages under California anti-discrimination law. Ferro has said that he was sacked after one of his employees noticed a scar on his arm from a decades-old injury, with an HR official saying he was "handicapped" and stating nothing could be done to accommodate him.

Vaughn's complaint also quotes allegedly features a letter from CEO Elon Musk, where he tells his employees to be "thick-skinned and accept that apology".

Overloaded with such allegations and lawsuits, Tesla is prepping to launch its semi truck on Thursday of this week.
