Braxton Beverly cleared to play immediately for NC State

Former Eastern Kentucky high school star finally wins NCAA appeal to play | Lexington Herald Leader

College basketball's governing body reversed itself and has declared the freshman eligible to play this season, starting with the Wolfpack's game Tuesday night against Bryant. Beverly attended summer school at Ohio State this past summer and then transferred to NC State after former Buckeyes coach Thad Matta was sacked in early June. But that triggered the NCAA designation as an undergraduate transfer as opposed to an incoming freshman.

In a statement, Beverly's attorney, Scott Tompsett, said Beverly is "absolutely thrilled" by the ruling and thanked the NCAA for reconsidering its initial stance. He is very grateful.

N.C. State announced October 13 that its initial request for Beverly's eligibility was denied, and it appealed that decision 10 days later. "Braxton is ready to compete for the NC State Wolfpack!" Because of the NCAA's extremely restrictive transfer rules, those classes kept Beverly tied to the Buckeyes after Matta left, and even though he never played a game, the NCAA was initially going to force him to sit out the season when he transferred to NC State, like all standard (non-coach) transfers have to do.

Beverly, a 6-foot shooting guard, committed to Ohio State past year out of Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va., where he averaged 20.1 points, 6.4 assists and 2.2 steals after moving there from Kentucky. Wolfpack assistant A.W. Hamilton coached Beverly last season at Hargrave. However, Beverly then hired a lawyer and submitted a final request for reconsideration to the NCAA, resulting in his immediate eligibility. "It was the right choice for a young man caught in a hard situation not of his own making".
