15000 scientists just sent a dire 'warning to humanity'

Scientists warn Earth is on the road to ruin

In 1992, concerns were expressed about "ozone depletion, freshwater availability, marine life depletion, ocean dead zones, forest loss, biodiversity destruction, climate change, and continued human population growth".

Thousands of scientists from all around the world have come together to issue another "warning to humanity" about the unprecedented threats that we as a species, and more importantly our planet as a whole, are now facing.

"25 years ago, the majority of living Nobel laureates published the World Scientists" Warning to Humanity. So we banned them, and things got better.

To mark the letter's 25th anniversary, researchers have issued a bracing follow-up.

The new warning, entitled "World Scientists' Warning to Humanity: A Second Notice" and published in the Bioscience journal, says that humanity has failed to make sufficient progress in solving its environmental challenges.

"Since 1992, with the exception of stabilizing the stratospheric ozone layer, humanity has failed to make sufficient progress in generally solving these foreseen environmental challenges, and alarmingly, a lot of them are getting far worse", the scientists wrote in the letter. Those chemicals were once used in refrigerators, air conditioners, and elsewhere, but we discovered they could trigger reactions in the atmosphere that broke down the ozone.

William Ripple, a professor at Oregon State, started the campaign #ScientistsWarningToHumanity on Twitter. Global average temperatures have risen by more than half a degree Celsius since 1992, and annual carbon dioxide emissions have increased by 62 percent.

Jones defends Thursday Night Football, says it's not too demanding on players
At least seven players left the game with an injury, including two starting players for the Cardinals . I know the players voted on it, even though we were the only team to unanimously vote against the CBA.

They call on people to pressure their representatives into action, such as to prevent further contributions to climate change, and don't shy away from the uncomfortable stuff, like asking for people to stop making so many babies. Access to fresh water has declined, as has the amount of forestland and the number of wild-caught fish (a marker of the health of global fisheries).

Collectively the number of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds and fish in the world has fallen by 29%.

Over this time, human numbers have increased by 2 billion, or 35 percent.

The group reminds that efforts to reduce ozone-depleting substances have shown efficacy-by cutting greenhouse gasses we've actually shrunk the size of the hole in the ozone layer to its smallest size in 30 years.

The new warning is signed by nearly 10 times the number of scientists who put their signatures on the last one.

To this end, Ripple and his colleagues have formed a new organization, the Alliance of World Scientists, aimed at providing a science-based perspective on issues affecting the well-being of people and the planet. They are acknowledging the obvious signs that we are heading down an unsustainable path.

The goal of the paper, said Ripple, is to "ignite a wide-spread public debate about the global environment and climate".
