The Russian government has begun the process of reprisals against the U.S. following the decision to force Kremlin-backed RT to register as a "foreign agent" under threat of having its bank accounts frozen.

RT, which is headquartered in Moscow and was formerly known as Russia Today, is accused by the US government of being a propaganda outlet for the Kremlin.

RT was identified as a purveyor of Russian propaganda in a now-famous dossier on potential Russian influence on the election of President Donald Trump.

RT complained that it acquiesced to United States demands to register as a "foreign agent" only under duress, fearful that its director of channel operations in the USA could be arrested if it failed to comply.

RT, which is funded by the Russian government, said in September that the Justice Department had asked the network to register as a foreign agent.

The disclosures by T&R Productions detail the relationship between the Washington-based production firm and RT parent ANO TV-Novosti, which is described in the filings as a Russian nongovernmental organization.

The embassy warned restrictions on the activities of Russian media "would inevitably entail immediate and reciprocal measures".

"Americans have a right to know who is acting in the United States to influence the US government or public on behalf of foreign principals", Acting Assistant Attorney General Dana Boente said in a statement Tuesday.

"The war the United States establishment wages with our journalists is dedicated to all the starry-eyed idealists who still believe in freedom of speech".

Moscow has repeatedly denied the allegations of election meddling and said it views the actions against RT as an unfriendly act.

A January assessment by USA intelligence agencies described RT America TV as "a Kremlin-financed channel operated from within the United States, [which] has substantially expanded its repertoire of programming that highlights criticism of alleged US shortcomings in democracy and civil liberties".
