Jacqui Lambie candidate resigned in 2016 because of citizenship

Jacqui Lambie could quit within 24 hours

It is not the first time Senator Lambie has been affected by the Constitution of Australia's dual-citizenship rules.

Senator Lambie, whose father was born in Scotland, has been checking with the British government after concerns were raised about her status and had already warned parliamentary colleagues that she would likely be leaving.

TASMANIAN Senator Jacqui Lambie is poised to become the latest casualty of the dual citizenship saga plaguing Federal Parliament. She confirmed on Tasmanian radio this morning that she will resign today.

She is making urgent inquiries with the UK Home Office about her status, and hopes to know the outcome within the next 24 hours.

Ms Lambie says she's proud of her Scottish heritage and had learned more about her father's family history in recent weeks while researching her autobiography, that was due for release next year.

Lambie's departure follows the resignations of five fellow senators; the Greens Scott Ludlam and Larissa Waters; the deputy leader of the National party, Fiona Nash; One Nation's Malcolm Roberts; and the Senate president, the Liberal Stephen Parry.

But it is true that she is now awaiting "urgent" advice from British authorities as to whether she holds dual citizenship.

Dead and Kid Survives in Crash on I-94 Near Detroit
Authorities are investigating after four people were killed in a crash on I-94 near Detroit early Monday morning. Speed, wet weather, and alcohol may have contributed to the crash, although the investigation is still ongoing.

"I'm happy to put on record that I'm satisfied that my parents are both Australian citizens and I have no concerns about me being a dual citizen because of where they were born or came from", she said.

During the 2016 federal election the Jacqui Lambie Network's leading candidate in Queensland, Bob Davis, resigned because he held British citizenship.

"I'd certainly have a good look at it, I just have to see what else is going on", she said.

The Turnbull Government is now facing two by-elections in the Lower House: one for Mr Joyce in New England, and another for John Alexander in Bennelong, who has also quit over a latent dual citizenship.

It is expected there could be more referrals to the High Court after the disclosures.

The government struck a deal to try to bring the citizenship crisis to a head with Labor today.
