Hate Crimes Increased Again in 2016, FBI Says

Over 6000 hate crimes recorded against Hindus Sikhs in US FBI

There were 6,121 hate crime incidents recorded a year ago, an nearly 5 percent rise from 2015 and a 10 percent increase from 2014, the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Hate Crimes Statistics report said.

Hate crimes in Minnesota rose for the second straight year in 2016, with the bulk of crimes motivated by the victim's race or ethnicity. That is a 4.6 increase from the year before, though 257 more law enforcement agencies contributed to the report in 2016 than in 2015.

The specific data for both Iowa and Nebraska can be found to the side of this article. In 2015 and 2016, that number was driven by crimes against people due to their race or ethnicity.

The Southern Poverty Law Centre (SPLC), an organization that tracks hate-crime and discrimination, said the rise in hate crimes "coincides with Donald Trump's racist, xenophobic campaign and its immediate aftermath".

North Dakota reported eight hate crimes past year. The number of participating agencies also varies from year to year.

In 2016, 6,121 hate crime incidents were reported -an increase of five percent from 2015.

In bias incidents based on gender or sexuality, the majority of victims were gay men-62.7 percent of the 1,255 victims of sexual-orientation bias.

Of the 124 incidents based on gender identity, 19 targeted gender non-conforming people, a decrease of 54 percent from 2015. Anti-Islamic hate crimes made up 24.8 percent of those crimes in 2016, up from 22.2 percent the year before. And Jews were targeted in more than half the 1 538 crimes that were motivated by religion.

On Monday, Sessions said the Justice Department is awaiting a full report from a task force on steps it can take to improve training for prosecutors and investigators, boost data collection on hate crimes and partner with local officials and communities. 63 percent of the crimes were related to bias against homosexual males, while 22 percent represented bias against homosexuals in general, bisexuals, and transgender individuals.

"No person should have to fear being violently attacked because of who they are, what they believe, or how they worship", Sessions said.
