Hampshire Police joining national firearms surrender

Fortnight-long firearms amnesty begins on November 13

He added: "Imitation and air pistols will cause horrendous trauma to people who suffer robberies and also they can result in a police incident where armed police are deployed and God forbid people are shot by a police officer because they think someone has a real firearm".

"Many firearms are held in innocence however there is always a risk that they can end up in the wrong hands and used in criminality".

During the two-week campaign, those surrendering firearms will not face prosecution for the illegal possession upon surrender and can remain anonymous. That's why we're offering people this opportunity to safely hand in their unwanted weapons which, if in the wrong hands, could be deadly.

"Fortunately North Wales does not have a significant gun crime problem, however we are not complacent about gun crime, which is why we are involved with the national surrender".

He said intelligence-led operations have smashed a number of gun-running rings, such as the one in Kent which brought in 31 Skorpion sub-machine guns, the same weapon used during the Charlie Hebdo attack in Paris.

Bedfordshire Police is taking part in a national drive to reduce the number of firearms that are vulnerable to falling into criminal hands.

"We are a predominately rural county with large numbers of registered shotgun and firearms holders who have legitimate access to weapons".

Weapons and ammunition can be surrendered at anyone of our eight staffed police stations. "We encourage the public to surrender as many guns and rounds of ammunition as possible to make our communities safer".

The surrender runs from Monday, November 13 to Sunday, November 16. Furthermore there may be people who, because of the change in legislation around possessing a firearm, now own a weapon they can not legally hold. This is an opportunity to dispose of them safely.

"While crimes involving firearms in Hampshire are rare, we know that every firearm poses a potential threat if they are not licensed and stored safely".

Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion said: "I am committed to building communities where people are safe and feel safe".

Latest crime figures released in October by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that crime involving firearms in England & Wales has increased by 27% (to 6,696).

Nabis head Detective Chief Superintendent Jo Chilton said: "Surrendering unwanted or illegal firearms avoids the risk of them becoming involved in crime and means that members of the community can dispose of them in a safe place". "This way you can be confident you have got rid of a firearm safely".

If you have a firearm in your possession that you do not want, call 101 and specially trained officers will arrange to collect it or advise you on how to apply for the required certificate.

During the last surrender in 2014, more than 6000 items were handed into police nationally.

Anyone needing advice on how best to transport the weapon or ammunition to their nearest police station should ring the force on 101.
