The shark attacked, biting him on the right shoulder, but Mr Fry said he managed to fight the shark off with a "Mick Fanning-inspired punch" and swim back to shore.

A British doctor has said he punched a shark on the nose that was "about to eat me" while surfing in Australia.

Charlie Fry, 25, was riding the waves at Avoca Beach - 60 miles north of Sydney, New South Wales - when the sea beast tried to feast its teeth on his skin. "So Mick, if you're watching or listening, I owe you a beer".

"So when it happened, I was like: 'Just do what Mick did. Thank you very much".

Mr Fry, a British citizen, has been living in Australia for two months and told the newspaper he's "worried" about telling his mum about the attack.

"I got this massive thud on my right-hand side, which completely blindsided me".

Fry, a surfing novice, was surfing with three doctor friends when he was attacked.

Fry said he wasn't conscious of his injured and bleeding arm until he reached the shore. "I'm literally about to die, '" Dr Fry said.

I was just surfing in going "get in as fast as possible, ride the wave as long as you can and then paddle for your life essentially",' he said.

But lifeguards spotted a great white shark and a bronze whaler in the area shortly after the horrific incident.

He said he would not be back in the sea for a week because of his injuries, but after that would be "racing to get back in".

The man was taken to Gosford Hospital by his friends after he sustained scratches and a puncture wound.

"North Avoca and Avoca beaches are now closed following a shark attack", the council said.

Fanning was competing at the J-Bay Open in South Africa two years ago when he was knocked off his board by a shark yet escaped unscathed.
