McLaren, Pirelli cancel Brazil tyre test due to security concerns

Staff at Sauber were the latest to be targeted

Pirelli now offers teams five tire compounds - hard, medium, soft, super-soft and ultra-soft - to use throughout the season, with any three being made available for each race weekend.

A Pirelli tyre test set to take place at the Interlagos circuit this week has been cancelled due to security fears after the Italian manufacturer had staff members targeted by robbers following Sunday's Brazilian Grand Prix. But after several robbery attempts on teams in Brazil over the weekend, the test got canceled. Although nobody was harmed during the attack, a gun was pressed to the head of one team member as valuables were stolen.

Eight members of Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes team suffered the most horrifying ordeal when they were robbed at gunpoint shortly after leaving the circuit on Friday night. (That's a little much.) But the test wasn't happening as of Monday.

Five separate incidents affecting F1 personnel are understood to have taken place across the Brazilian GP weekend.

Pirelli is due to carry out a tyre test this week in Brazil with McLaren's Stoffel Vandoorne and Lando Norris taking part, before all ten teams carry out testing in Abu Dhabi following the final race of the season.

'The decision, shared with McLaren, FIA and Formula 1, was made in the interest of the safety of the personnel, both McLaren's and our own, who would have participated in the test'. In 2010, the reigning world champion Jenson Button was held at gunpoint when he left the circuit, but escaped unharmed.

Formula One bosses say they can not be held responsible for the security failings which dogged the Brazilian Grand Prix and have urged chiefs of the Interlagos circuit to find a solution to the issue in time for the 2018 race.

Speaking during the weekend, Hamilton said: "The most frustrating thing is that I've been in Formula One for 10 years and every single year that has happened to somebody in the paddock, and it continues to happen".

'It's no good just the bosses or myself having security; everyone else needs to be looked after'.
