'For the future of Asia, humanity': PM Modi, President Trump bilateral meet

"Glad to meet President Trump again", said PM Modi at the outset of the press brief.

"Photo session & Handshake by leaders during the Opening Ceremony of the #ASEANSummit in #Manila, #Philippines", Indian public broadcaster Doordarshan posted on Twitter along with a video in which Modi was seen sharing the stage with world leaders and shaking hands with them.

The two leaders are expected to deliberate on a number of key issues of mutual interest including the evolving security situation in the Indo-Pacific region where Washington favours a greater role by India.

Along with the 31st ASEAN Summit, the PM and the Vietnamese delegation are scheduled to participate in the 20th Meeting of the ASEAN Plus Three (China, Japan and the Republic of Korea), the ASEAN meetings with China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, India, the US, Canada, the European Union, and the United Nations.

Modi will attend the 15th India-Asean Summit and the 12th East Asia Summit in Manila on Tuesday.

The move to set up the quadrilateral comes in the backdrop of growing Chinese assertiveness in the South China Sea.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the India-Asean dialogue partnership and the golden jubilee of the formation of the Asean.

In his maiden visit to the Philippines as prime minister, Modi will also interact with the Indian Community and visit the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and the Mahavir Philippines Foundation.
