Jadon Sancho recall a 'disappointment', says England under-17 boss Steve Cooper

Jadon Sancho and Angel Gomes celebrate the opening goal against Iraq

England U-17 coach Steve Cooper confirmed on Monday that star attacking midfielder Jadon Sancho has left the team's campaign at the ongoing Federation Internationale de Football Association U-17 World Cup and returned to Germany to join his club Borussia Dortmund for the ongoing German Bundesliga season.

The 17-year-old returned to the German club on Monday from global duty and scored for Dortmund's U18 side in the UEFA Youth League on Tuesday against APOEL.

England had sailed through the group stages, but lacked Jadon Sancho's spark in Tuesday's game.

England showed character in the penalty shootout with a 100 per cent conversion, beginning with Rhian Brewster, who slotted it home with Japan goalkeeper Kosei Tani making a wrong dive. Anderson's goalkeeping however was on point on the day and they could not find the back of the net.

Japan proved to be competitive opponents and were constantly attacking.

England will travel to U.S. for their round of eight clash in Goa on Sunday.

After a barren first half, Japan showed some objective and forced a number of corners but failed to convert the chances into goal.

The match slowly picked up pace after both the teams looked tentative with their moves in the first 10 minutes.

Borussia Dortmund have recalled Jadon Sancho from the U17s World Cup, suggesting that he is in line to make his debut for the club.

Foden initiated the moves but they failed to finish and survived a couple of Japanese onslaught late in the first- half. For Japan, Hinata Kida's effort was saved by Curtis Anderson and that made the difference between the teams after regulation time ended goalless.
