'Settlers of Catan' Movie in the Works From Sony

'Settlers of Catan' Movie Adaptation in the Works at Sony (EXCLUSIVE)

According to Variety, Sony will develop the game into a feature film with the hope of potentially starting a franchise. The game board representing the island is composed of hexagonal tiles (hexes) of different land types which are laid out randomly at the beginning of each game.

Sony Pictures is now attempting to adapt the 1995 board game The Settlers Of Catan into a feature film. Their team is joined by John Eirich and together they'll be working from a script by Blaise Hemingway. With movies based on all kinds of toys and the like - such as The LEGO Movie and The Emoji Movie - studios are looking to license films based on popular pieces of pop culture and Settlers of Catan is an unsurprising candidate. Gail Katz, who acquired the rights to Catan in 2015, is on board to produce.

Gail Katz released a statement saying "We're excited to be working with Sony to bring the iconic world of Catan to life". He added that he was also a huge fan of the game and he believed on the endless opportunities that the movie will inspire its viewers, Entertainment Weekly reported. Upon its original release in 1995, game critics in Germany honored Catan with its prestigious game of the year award. In a report from Entertainment Weekly, it was revealed that the popular game had sold more than 25 million copies around the world, in about 38 languages.

What do you think of The Settlers of Catan coming to the big screen from Sony? The Settlers of Catan also boasts millions of rabid players, an active online community, and you can also play the game online here. At the time, Katz said, "I've been wanting to see an adaptation of the game for years, ever since my Catan-obsessed college-aged kids introduced me to it".
