Facebook supports full disclosure on Russia-backed ads: Sheryl Sandberg

Facebook's Sheryl Sandberg says Congress should 'absolutely' release Russia adverts

While Facebook's chief operating officer, Sheryl Sandberg, now favours the release, she didn't say on Thursday when the company would do so.

Sandberg is meeting with elected officials in Washington this week ahead of a House hearing at which executives from Facebook, Twitter and Google are expected to testify. The Senate Intelligence Committee is also holding an open hearing with the three companies that day.

This is an ongoing investigation, the new information will be posted as being reported.

"This is a very fragile moment in time for African-Americans across this country", Richmond told reporters after the meeting. "What we needed Facebook to understand is that they play a role in the perception of African-Americans, and they are influencers that use their platform to influence this country". "We told Congress and the intelligence committees that when they are ready to release the ads, we are ready to help them". Sandberg also held a separate meeting with Schiff, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi of California and No. 2 House Democrat Steny Hoyer of Maryland.

Sandberg said Facebook would provide additional material to investigators as needed to determine the level of foreign interference in the U.S. election.

"Things happened on our platform in this election that should not have happened", Sandberg said.

Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) lawmakers said Thursday that Facebook planned to add a black person to its board of directors after they met to discuss Russian bought ads on the website. That's a break from the Senate intelligence committee, which had said it won't release them. The interview was the first by a senior Facebook executive since the company disclosed last month that it had found some 3,000 politically divisive ads believed to have been bought by Russian Federation before and after the presidential campaign.

Both men said that in the end, voters need to be more aware of the type of information they are seeking out. "We don't check the information people put on Facebook before they run it, and I don't think any one should want us to do that".

Sandberg said when Twitter initially took down the ad and said Blackburn could only run the free content, they made a mistake. Some of the ads showed white police officers beating black people, said the member, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the ads aren't yet public. The member declined to be named because the ads aren't yet public.

Sandberg, who was in Washington for meetings with USA lawmakers, told the congressional black caucus on Thursday that Facebook planned to add an African-American to its board of directors, a source familiar with the closed-door meeting said, but she offered no details.

"It is my belief that Facebook can not be the Trojan Horse through which America's vulnerabilities are exploited", Kelly wrote.

In addition, Robert Mueller, a former director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, is conducting a criminal probe, including whether President Trump's campaign colluded with Russian operatives during the election season.
