Macron seeks a more integrated Europe, Brexit or no

Emmanuel Macron looks to stamp 'non' on banker-style jobless payouts

French President Emmanuel Macron's proposals to strengthen the European Union drew mixed reaction in Germany, with a lawmaker from Chancellor Angela Merkel's Bavarian allies warning against turning the bloc into an "unlimited transfer union".

Under such a scenario, Republic on the Move! is likely to seek alliances in the Senate with other centrists and moderate Republicans and Socialists to approve Macron's business-friendly economic reforms.

But Hans Michelbach, a lawmaker from Merkel's CSU allies, said Macron's ideas were unsuitable to take Europe forward. "We need more mechanisms to stabilize against monetary shocks".

One Elysee official said that since a eurozone budget would "be necessary in due course", Macron felt it worthwhile to broach the issue, which he hoped would be taken into consideration during Germany's coalition negotiations.

Only the eurozone, "with a strong and worldwide currency", can provide the basis for a globally competitive European economy, Macron argued.

EMMANUEL MACRON today called for a joint budget to cover the whole of the eurozone in the latest sign that the European Union is set to get even more powerful in future years.

Juncker, however, did not support the idea of a separate eurozone budget or parliament.

"She will have an opportunity to get together with Emmanuel Macron and to sketch out ideas about how to take the European Union into the next decade - in terms of economic and financial stability, in terms of enhancing our ability to act militarily and politically", Ischinger said in an interview.

Merkel has said she is not opposed to having a eurozone finance minister, but differs with Macron on how powerful the role should be. Merkel has spoken of a budget with a "smaller sum". "It weakens all Europe".

The British government's own position paper on defence matters surrounding leaving the European Union makes clear the possibility of cooperating with the European Defence Agency, which President Macron is now calling to be transformed into a common European force.

Britain could once more "find its place" within a reformed, multi-speed EU, Macron said.

He proposed a European army within three years, a continent-wide office for asylum seekers, a police force to control the EU's borders and a carbon tax applying all across Europe.

Macron doesn't want to wait for Britain to leave the EU in 2019 to tie European economies closer together.

"In this union re-centred around intransigent values and an efficient market, in a few years the United Kingdom will be able, if it so wishes, to find its place". "Let's not be afraid to say it, to desire it", he said.

Mr Macron offered a sweeping vision for a renewal of Europe in his speech, calling for the European Union to cooperate more closely on defence, immigration, tax and social policy, and for the single currency bloc to have its own budget.

Speaking in Athens earlier this month, he argued that such a process would be democratic without suffering the shortcomings of referendums, "the sole weapon of populists".
