Yankees Judge rules rookie home run record

Yankees Aaron Judge ties Mark McGwire with 49th HR as rookie

After Monday's game, the Yankees still have six remaining.

In 2016, Judge made his Major League Baseball debut, hitting a home run in his first plate appearance, but he struck out in 42 of his 84-at-bats, hitting.179. The rookie phenom is powering the New York Yankees' effort in a home tilt against the Kansas City Royals while hitting two home runs in the process.

Judge, the Yankees' hulking right fielder, bashed his 49th and 50th home runs of the season, tying and then breaking the rookie record set by Oakland's Mark McGwire in 1987.

In spring training, Judge nearly wasn't named the starting right fielder.

Understandably, he was summoned for a curtain call as well. But on Monday, a new record was set by - who else? His post-All-Star break stretch included setting a position-player record for strikeouts in consecutive games, so there are still parts of his game the 25-year-old success story needs to iron out.

Judge's two-run blast in the third inning to the opposite field against Royals righty Jakob Junis also gave him at least one home run against every American League opponent this season.

Judge's 50th homer was good for ninth-most home runs in a season for a Yankee, moving past the 49-homer mark by Lou Gehrig (1934, 1936) and Babe Ruth (1930).
