Violet Mosse-Brown passed away in the home in the town of Duanvale in western Jamaica.

Ms Brown was born in 1900 in Jamaica, then part of the British West Indies.

The last days of her life were fraught with tension as Brown was caught in the middle of a dispute among members of her family.

Jamaican supercentenarian Violet Mosse-Brown has died at the age of 117, Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness tweeted Friday evening.

Her reign as the world's oldest person did not last long; but her life - well, that's a whole 'nother story.
