Residents Dead In Florida Nursing Home That Lost Power After Irma

US President Donald Trump says devastation left by Hurricane Irma was far greater than anyone expected

Eight people died at a nursing home in the US state of Florida after its air conditioning system was knocked out by Hurricane Irma, authorities said Wednesday.

Elderly residents were evacuated Wednesday morning from the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills which lost power during the storm.

Elsewhere in South Florida, other alarms were sounded for older residents.

"We have some major road blockages throughout Broward County", Sharief said.

Around 115 residents of the retirement home in Hollywood, north of Miami, were immediately evacuated after a nearby hospital began receiving patients suffering from heat-related problems.

An individual handling air conditioning for the facility told ABC affiliate WPLG that a fuse was damaged during Hurricane Irma, resulting in cooling issues for the past few days.

He later met with local officials and first responders in Fort Myers and Naples to hear of the impacts of Hurricane Irma firsthand. Scott said the damage looked very bad from the air, but it looked much worse on the ground.

Running back John Kelly went off for 128 yards and four touchdowns, while receiver Marquez Callaway caught two of the TD passes. The last time they met, Tennessee ended an 11-game losing streak against the Gators with a 38-28 victory at Neyland Stadium.

At least 56 of Florida's 639 nursing homes still have no electricity on Friday morning, five days after Hurricane Irma.

The deaths may be due to the loss of the home's air-conditioning after Hurricane Irma struck Sunday, according to CNN affiliate WPLG. Several hard-hit Caribbean islands, including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, suffered more than half the fatalities. The center said it plans to the fight the state's efforts to shut it down. Administrator Jorge Carballo says the facility is cooperating fully with authorities as they investigate.

Police said they have sealed off the building and opened a criminal probe after the remaining nursing home patients were transferred to neighboring hospitals.

"It is 100 percent the governor's responsibility to do everything in his power protect every Floridian", she said. She said Bobby Owens had been at the facility for more than 10 years. However, when she showed up to work, paramedics were barring the doors and telling her she could not enter. "But nobody from the facility has told me anything yet".

"As ANY health care provider knows to do, if their patients are in danger - they MUST call 911", Scott said in a written statement. No details have been released about the causes of death. Nelson demanded a federal investigation.

"We understand what it means to be in the dark", Robert Gould, vice president and chief communications officer for Florida Power and Light (FPL), said.

Florida's healthcare agency ordered the nursing home on Thursday to be suspended from the state Medicaid program.
