Former Egyptian president's prison sentence reduced by 15 years

Egypt court upholds life sentence for jailed president

The court has referred the case to Grand Mufti, the country's highest Islamic official who will give the religious judgment of all preliminary death sentences.

A life sentence given to Egypt's ousted President Mohamed Morsi has been upheld, a move that apparently shows the government in Cairo has no intention of easing a crackdown on the followers of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood.

The court has set a November 25 date for issuing the final verdict in the case, which involves 20 defendants.

The documents allegedly include information on general and military intelligence, armed forces and state policy secrets which harm the national security.

After a long legal battle, Egypt's Court of Cassation reduced former President Mohamed Morsi's sentence to 25 years in the Qatar spy case. In October last year, the same court had confirmed a 20- year prison sentence against Morsi for taking part inciting violence near Ittihadeya presidential palace in 2012.

Morsi, democratically elected after Egypt's 2011 revolution, was removed from his position in mid-2013 by a coup led by Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the army chief of the time.

Courts have sentenced hundreds of Islamists to death, including other Muslim Brotherhood leaders, though many have appealed and been granted new trials.

He came to power after Egypt's long-time president Hosni Mubarak was toppled in an uprising in 2011.

In a separate case, the court condemned to death seven people for membership of a militant group affiliated to the ISIS group in Libya. His decision, however, is not binding.

The court will give its final sentence against another 13 accused with the same charges in November 25.

The verdict is subject to appeal.

The defendants are also charged with joining training camps of the terrorist group in Syria and Libya, and obtaining military training, as well as planning terrorist acts in Egypt.
