After A Decade of Improvement, Global Hunger Increases

FACTBOX-Global hunger rises for first time in a decade - UN agencies

The building peaceful and inclusive societies is a necessary condition for that goal, "they said".

In an annual report on the state of food security, the United Nations said 815 million people were chronically undernourished last year, 38 million more than the previous year, the Associated Press reported.

"We have a lot of research. which says food insecurity doesn't directly lead to conflict, but it is a very powerful trigger".

The report is the first United Nations global assessment on food security and nutrition to be released following the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which aims to end hunger and all forms of malnutrition by 2030 as a top worldwide policy priority. The largest number live in Asia (520 million), followed by Africa (243 million), and Latin America and the Caribbean (42 million).

But proportionally Africa is hardest hit, with 20 percent of people not having enough food - in Asia the ratio is 11.7 percent, according to the reported prepared by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the International Fund for Agricultural Development, the United Nations Children's Fund, the World Food Program and the World Health Organization.

The agencies called for new ways of working to achieve the goal of ending hunger and malnutrition by 2030.

Aid can sometimes increase tensions in a community.

Aid programmes that create jobs, restore roads and improve farming in countries recovering from war help address root causes of conflict, the FAOsaid. And these are expected to become more frequent with climate change.

The apparent halt to declining hunger numbers is not yet reflected in the prevalence of child stunting, which continues to fall, though the pace of improvement is slower in some regions, the report warns.

Earlier this year Unicef estimated that "more than 460,000 children in Yemen face severe malnutrition, while 3.3 million children and pregnant or lactating women suffer from acute malnutrition".

The number of stunted children - short for their age - fell by 40 per cent between 1990 and 2015.

52 million children aren't heavy enough for their height.

"Obesity is going to increasingly affect the poor, caused by poor diet and poor lifestyle", Mr Aguayo said.

Sixty percent of the world's chronically hungry people were in areas experiencing man-made conflict.

"The food security situation has worsened in particular in parts of sub-Saharan Africa, South-Eastern Asia and Western Asia, and deteriorations have been observed most notably in situations of conflict and conflict combined with droughts or floods".

The situation is likely to improve this year, U.N. FAO Secretary General Jose Graziano da Silva said at a press conference, citing an improving economy, fading odds of El Ni?o and progress made in conflict-affected areas.

"To save lives, we must save livelihoods also".

"If we want to beat poverty, injustice and hunger we need to tackle climate change".
