North Korea threatens to 'sink' Japan, reduce USA to 'ashes and darkness'

N. Korean group demands US be turned to 'ashes and darkness'

"Japan is no longer needed to exist near us", the statement added.

U.S. defence analysts said satellite imagery confirmed that North Korea had resumed work at the nuclear testing site. "Let's reduce the United States mainland into ashes and darkness", the communist outlet reported, also vowing to resort to "all retaliation means which have been prepared till now".

Pyongyang has ramped up missile testing this year, and earlier this month it conducted its sixth nuclear test, believed to be the most powerful yet, and has also claimed it has the capability to mount a hydrogen bomb on top of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) capable of reaching the mainland US.

North Korea often issues bellicose threats that it doesn't actually carry out.

To the United States, the country that initiated and promoted the intensification of the sanctions on North Korea in the Security Council, Pyongyang issued an explicit threat: "Let's reduce the USA mainland into ashes and darkness".

It said Tokyo should never be forgiven for not offering a honest apology for its "never-to-be-condoned crimes against our people" in an apparent reference to Japan's wartime aggression.

Japan criticised the North's statement harshly.

Responding to the latest threat, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga described it as 'extremely provocative'.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe called the previous launch "an unprecedented, grave and serious threat", while Trump reiterated that "all options" are under consideration in response to Pyongyang's actions.

There was also activity at another location in the Mount Mantap site, in the north-east, involving large vehicles and mining equipment that suggested "onsite work could now be changing focus to further prepare those other portals for future underground nuclear testing", 38 North said.

The latest round of tough sanctions against North Korea had the support of China and Russian Federation, who have favoured Pyongyang at several instances in the past despite mounting pressure from the US.

On Aug. 22, the US government unilaterally sanctioned Russian firms engaged in crude oil trade with North Korea, freezing their assets among other measures.

China, which is estimated to account for roughly 90% of North Korea's foreign trade, has been repeatedly criticized by experts for not doing enough to implement previous United Nations sanctions.

"How would we know if China is limiting crude oil exports if it doesn't report the data to begin with?" asked Kent Boydston, a research analyst at the Peterson Institute for International Economics.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said the worldwide community had reached a "high consensus" on trying to realise a peaceful solution.

The North accuses the United States, which has 28,500 troops in South Korea, of planning to invade and regularly threatens to destroy it and its Asian allies.
