Motel 6 receives backlash for response to immigration report

Two Arizona Motel 6s accused of ratting out undocumented guests to ICE

In the first eight months of 2017, at least 20 undocumented immigrants were arrested at two Motel 6 locations in Arizona after employees shared information with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Could one ever imagine that the immigration debate would extend to ... the front desk of Motel 6, home of the "We'll leave the light on for you" slogan?

The Phoenix New Times highlights Manuel Rodriguez-Juarez's claims that he got a room at a nearby Motel 6 after an argument with his live-in girlfriend.

Empowered by the Trump administration and President Donald Trump's promise to severely crack down on illegal immigration, ICE agents have ramped up efforts to arrest undocumented immigrants.

It's unclear the extent to which the Motel 6 employees worked with Ice.

"You can be a documented immigrant and have that ID card".

In a statement to KPHO, Motel 6 spokeswoman Raiza Rehkoff said the company is investigating how long the Phoenix location was sharing guest information with immigration authorities.

United Kingdom terror-related arrests rise to record 379
According to the Home Office , 91% of those in custody held Islamist extremist reviews, while 5% were from the far-right. A total of 379 people were held on suspicion of terror-related crimes in the year to June - more than one every day.

Phoenix attorney Robert McWhirter, whose client was arrested at a Motel 6 in June, told the New Times that reports of ICE agents knocking door-to-door for people who appeared to be Latino would raise concerns of racial profiling.

A spokesperson for Phoenix's ICE division said that the agency "wouldn't be able to confirm how we are getting our information". As someone who has had to stay at motels out of necessity (for both geographic and financial reasons), they are places you go when you don't have any other choice. "The client said he gave them a Mexican ID card - but there's people who visit the USA all the time who have Mexican IDs". This makes the story of what's been happening at two Phoenix-area Motel 6's especially bad and disgusting. "When we became aware of it last week, it was discontinued". "Every morning at a out 5 o'clock, we do the audit and we push a button and it sends it to ICE".

The article implied (and sources suggested) that motel employees have been sending information to ICE when they suspect that undocumented immigrants have checked in.

Motel 6 is corporate owned, not franchised, so this is not a case of a largely unaffiliated manager going rogue to make double the rent on a room.

An immigration attorney, Denise Aguilar, tells the New Times that some of her clients have heard these rumors, as well.

Under the policy's "compliance with the law" section, it states that "we may disclose guest information to law enforcement agencies, or may be required to disclose it during the discovery process in litigation, pursuant to a court order, or in compliance with any applicable law, regulation, rule or ordinance".
