Former Brazilian President Silva complains of witch hunt

Brazil's Lula undergoes new grilling by anti-corruption judge

Wesley Batista is accused of improperly profiting from trades in JBS shares and United States dollars between April 24 and May 17 ahead of the announcement of a plea bargain between both brothers and prosecutors in the Temer-related case.

Should the investigation reveal incriminating information that leads to the prosecutor formally charging the president, Congress would have to vote [WP report] on whether the president should be put on trial.

Several other charges are pending for Silva, who has denied any wrongdoing and says the accusations are politically motivated.

It is reported that the Batista brothers, Wesley and Joesley, who control JBS SA have been detained by police in Brazil following allegations of potential insider trading. But prosecutors are now looking into those deals.

"In a statement posted on the JBS SA website, the company said "...it became aware of the detention of its Global CEO, Wesley Batista, this morning, as a result of a decision signed by the 6th Federal Criminal Jurisdiction of São Paulo.

Joesley and Wesley Batista then entered into a plea deal with investigators, which offered them immunity from prosecution in exchange for information about their company's bribery scheme.

Grenfell Tower fire public inquiry to get under way
Demonstrators gathered outside the building where Sir Martin made his address carrying banners that read: "Justice for Grenfell". Nearly 70 per cent of the council and housing association-owned blocks have only one staircase through which to evacuate.

Brazil's currency, the real, posted its biggest daily drop in almost a month, slipping 0.8 percent against the US dollar as the investigation and a separate police probe into Temer's allies kept pressure on the president.

Indeed, news of the plea deal in May caused JBS's stock and the Brazilian real to take 9.7% and 8.2% dives, respectively.

Between late April and mid-May, while negotiating their plea bargains, the brothers made large purchases of dollars on the futures markets, Rodrigues Alves said.

The arrest of the Batista brothers has improved Temer's prospects of surviving the new charges and serving out his term through 2018. During that period, their holding company also sold hundreds of millions of dollars in JBS shares. He said his clients had cooperated with authorities at every step and suggested they were being targeted by some within the government for having reached plea bargains.

"The victims are not just JBS shareholders", Rodrigues Alves said.
