Notorious Trump supporter David Clarke steps down as Milwaukee County's sheriff

But a potential appointment isn't the only reason Clarke might be eager to move on from his job at the hub of the Milwaukee County law enforcement wheel.

"Pursuant to Wis. § Stat 17.01, this communication is submitted as the notice of my resignation as Sheriff of Milwaukee County commencing August 31, 2017 at 11:59 p.m." the letter read.

But Clarke has been fighting a series of scandals in his position as sheriff in Milwaukee County as well, including the death of a mentally ill man who was allegedly deprived of water in his cell.

David Clarke resigned abruptly from his long-standing post as Milwaukee County Sheriff on Thursday afternoon.

Clarke has been a frequent guest at conservative events around the country and on cable TV, which critics have argued has taken his attention away from his duties as sheriff. Walker's spokesman Tom Evenson said once he receives official notification of his resignation, the process of finding a replacement will begin.

Clarke gained national notoriety as a major supporter for President Donald Trump and for past inflammatory remarks on Fox News and social media, such as when he called a black CNN commentator a "jigaboo" and repeatedly claimed that Black Lives Matter is a "hate group" and a "terror organization".

The sheriff could not immediately be reached for comment.

Some Wisconsin conservatives had encouraged Clarke to challenge U.S. Sen.

Clarke also aggressively pushed his department to partner with the Department of Homeland Security to crack down on and round up undocumented immigrants.

The agency never confirmed, and Clarke later stated that he withdrew his name from consideration. He recently published a memoir, "Cop Under Fire".
