Amazon Prime Members To Get Whole Foods Discounts

Amazon to cut Whole Foods prices Monday

Amazon did not say how much it would cut prices in Whole Foods stores, 460 of which are spread across the United States, Canada and Britain. Amazon and Whole Foods will begin to integrate Amazon Prime into the Whole Foods point-of-sale system, giving Prime members special savings on items in-store.

It's an "opening salvo" in the grocery wars, said Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData Retail, and shares of other supermarkets fell sharply on the news.

Noting the recently struck deal between Google and Walmart, McKnight said, "If you're not Walmart, if you're not Amazon and Whole Foods, who's your cyber partner to make you stand out in this evolution?" Wilke said Whole Foods' private label products - including 365 Everyday Value, Whole Foods Market, Whole Paws and Whole Catch - will be available through Amazon.com, AmazonFresh, Prime Pantry, and Prime Now.

Amazon is making a big bet on physical stores and the business of food. The moves fit in Amazon's track record of keeping prices low to lock in customer loyalty. Amazon Lockers will be available in select Whole Foods Market stores.

As our team previously covered, this isn't the first time that retailers have felt the ripple effect of Amazon's entry into brick and mortar grocery. "Its shareholders are agnostic about profit, and seem more interested in revenue and market share". "Amazon's competitive advantage is its speed - and that's what it's bringing here, with quick turnaround and quick changes".

"While we are encouraged to see Google continue to enhance its eCommerce/Shopping offering, we believe the attention the announcement received was overblown", Blackledge wrote, noting that only 4% of USA households that buy products online bought groceries via Google Express in July.

Shares of Kroger, the biggest United States supermarket operator, closed down 8 percent, while Wal-Mart, the biggest USA food seller, closed down 2 percent.

The $13.7 billion deal is set to go through August 28, and if all goes as planned, Whole Foods shoppers will see some prices drop immediately, according to the Washington Post.

"Lower prices could be catastrophic for some operators", said Madeline Hurley, a senior analyst at market research firm IBISWorld.

On average, she said, supermarkets only squeeze about $1 of profit out of every $100 in revenue. By taking aim at staple items, Whole Foods' store traffic and sales could see an uptick quickly. Walmart has also significantly increased its investment in online shopping through acquisitions to better compete with Amazon on its main turf.

On Thursday, stock prices of rival grocers took a hit on the promise of lower-priced goods at Whole Foods.

Say goodbye to Whole Foods Market Inc.'s (WFM) 365 stores. Amazon completed the purchase in less than three months - unusual for a multibillion-dollar transaction.
