Search underway for Army chopper that crashed off Oahu with 5 aboard

Helicopter and boat crews are involved in the search, the Coast Guard said.

An Army UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter went down during a training exercise about 2 miles off the Hawaiian island of Oahu, according to the US Coast Guard.

It's unclear exactly what happened.

A Coast Guard plane, two helicopters and several boats were being used in the search. We stand with our U.S. Army 'ohana during this hard time.

The two helicopters are elements of the 25th Combat Aviation Brigade based in Hawaii.

The crashed helicopter are from Wheeler Army Airfield, she added. Park officials said there will be "no vehicle, foot, or bicycle traffic" allowed on roads and trails through the Mokuleia or the Keawaula sections of the park during the closure.

The Coast Guard issued an emergency marine broadcast and launched a rescue operation with assistance from the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD).

The Coast Guard got a report of a possible downed aircraft about 10:08 p.m. Tuesday from personnel at Wheeler Army Airfield.

Officials spotted a debris field late Tuesday night local time. A fuselage has been reportedly found.

At this time 5 people are reported as missing. HFD Captain David Jenkins says the search area is being scoured in the air, on land and sea.
