Win or lose, 'lightning' Bolt is the king in swansong race

Gatlin spoils Bolt's farewell in 100m with remarkable gold

Usain Bolt's final track appearance has been marred, with the sprinting legend pulling up injured in the 4x100m relay at the IAAF World Championships.

The 30-year-old Bolt will pull in $34.2 million this year, according to Forbes, making him the 23rd-highest-paid athlete in the world.

After his shock defeat by Justin Gatlin in the 100metres last Saturday, those in power at the sport's governing body can be forgiven for willing the Jamaican to bow out in style with one last gold medal.

After a short while, though, he rose gingerly to his feet and limped across the line to huge cheers from the 56,000 crowd. He was clutching his leg on the ground and needed help off the track. On Saturday, August 12, Bolt is slated to run in his last race overall, representing Jamaica in the 4x100m relay finals.

The 26-year-old from Sand Hill, Miss., the silver medal victor in the 100 at the Rio Olympics last August, coming in second to Thompson, ended an impressive stretch for the 25-year-old from Manchester, Jamaica. When the race begins and you see someone you know a mere 20 metres in front of you our demeanour changes to one of predator catching prey.

Bolt's swan song was the World Championships 2017. Despite his third place finish in this race, Bolt is without a doubt the greatest sprinter of all time.

Bolt will anchor Jamaica in the heats.

He will retire with a haul of eight Olympic Gold medals from three consecutive Olympic Games, an eleven-time world champion and three world records, one of which might never be broken in our life time, the 100 metres record of 9.58. Say, for instance, when you're growing up, you're walking down the street, you've got to tell everybody good morning.

The Olympic champions, featuring Aaliyah Brown, Allyson Felix, Morolake Akinosun and Ariana Washington, won the opening heat in a time of 41.84 seconds, challenged only by the British quartet who came second in 41.93.

Despite not winning his final individual race as a professional athlete, there is an unanimous agreement in Usain Saint Leo Bolt being the greatest sprinter of all times. We need to believe everything we see when we watch sport is clean and real, otherwise what is the point.

This much was attested to by no other athletic personality than the legendary Michael Johnson whose 200 meters record Bolt shattered.

The Institute of Theoretical Astrophysics at the University of Oslo did a scientific analysis of that run and estimated that Bolt could have finished with a time of 9.55 seconds if he hadn't slowed down to celebrate.

"Mo has proven himself over and over again", Bolt said.

That said, it's noteworthy that resounding jeers greeted Gatlin when he was introduced for this race.

"It nearly looks like I am winning!" Can the same be said of Bolt? I completely lost my race plan.
