Letting Obamacare implode might be Trump's least popular position yet

CBS News Poll

The survey was taken following last month's Senate derailment of the GOP drive to supplant much of President Barack Obama's statute with a diminished federal role in health care.

And by almost 2-to-1, most say it's good that the Senate rejected the GOP repeal-and-replace bill last month. If Republicans break Obamacare, they've bought it.

But Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) blamed President Trump's early timelines, saying, "Our new president has of course not been in this line of work before and I think had excessive expectations about how quickly things happen in the democratic process".

Now comes the news that a number of GOP senators have been traveling to battleground states and testing the waters to run for president in 2020 against Mr. Trump. Citing the "reality of the complexity of legislating" and the president's inexperience in government, McConnell said that he found criticism of the lack of progress "extremely irritating". Half favor the law vs. 46% who oppose it.

A large majority of the public disapproves of Trump's suggestion that Republicans "let Obamacare implode" and move on to other policy priorities - 78% of those polled said Trump should do what he can to make the law work.

Most Democrats (70%) and independents (59%) favor the bi-partisan approach, though almost half of Republicans (49%) and Trump supporters (46%) want Republicans to continue pursuing their own plan to repeal and replace the law. For a White House that often seems more concerned with cementing support from Trump's loyalists than embracing the political center, that might help explain Trump's persistence on the issue. "But if Democrats keep this generic ballot lead at least in the high single digits, you have to take their chances of retaking the House seriously", said Geoffrey Skelley, a political forecaster at the University of Virginia's Center for Politics.

Nearly 6 in 10 people think the Republicans should work with Democrats to improve the health law.

The companies use the money to trim out-of-pocket costs for deductibles and copayments for around 7 million low- and middle-income people.

The Kaiser Health Tracking Poll was conducted August 1-6 and involved random calls to the cellphones and landlines of 1,211 adults.

The poll was "based on telephone interviews conducted August 2-6, 2017, with a random sample of 1,017 adults, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 USA states and the District of Columbia".
