Switch Joy-Con controllers have Nintendo in legal trouble

Gamevice

The lawsuit claims that the Nintendo Switch and its detachable Joy-Con controllers closely resemble what Gamevice had in mind for their own take on a game controller.

A company who doesn't think Nintendo is innovative is Gamevice, the manufacturer of the Wikipad and various detachable controllers for phones and tablets.

Gamevice is suing Nintendo over the design of the Joy-Cons, claiming that Nintendo is infringing on their patented design.

But Gamevice claims that the Switch is too similar to its Wikipad controller. As I'm sure you are already aware, the Nintendo Switch is powered by NVIDIA's mobile Tegra processor.

'This both held the Wikipad while providing separate gaming controls, e.g., joysticks, buttons and triggers, so that avid video gamers could enjoy a full screen gaming experience'.

Portable gaming is hardly a novel concept, and the basic appearance of the handheld Switch is reminiscent of older Nintendo and Sony consoles. The paperwork for the case has also been released online so you can see just how Gamevice's legal team is trying to prove the infringement.

The Wikipad looks notably different to the Switch. According to financial analysts, Nintendo can sell around 10 million units by the end of this financial year only if the lawsuit doesn't halt or result in the closure of Switch's production. There was an early concept of Wii U back in 2012 that had similar controllers. The Nintendo Switch battery life could be proof of this and allow the company to establish a key difference between its hardware and Gamevice's. The Switch is mobile and works with televisions, but Nintendo has been quite adamant that it is a home console first and a mobile device second.

Now the complaint has been filed, the court should issue a summons to the defendants, in this case Nintendo and its subsidiary Nintendo of America.
