Stoneman, Crane included in England squad for first Test against West Indies

Alastair Cook's defiant 88 in the second Test set the tone and we took that to Manchester

Jennings was dropped from the England squad to face the West Indies in a day/night Test at Edgbaston later this month.

Surrey batsman Stoneman is set to debut at Edgbaston and the 30-year-old will become former captain Alastair Cook's 12th opening partner since the 2012 retirement of Andrew Strauss.

After leaving Durham for Surrey, he has scored 1,033 first-class runs this season, averaging 57.38 and hitting three centuries.

"It's been a long road, a few ups and downs, but to get that call was quite the release of emotion and something I am very proud of. The experiences I have had now, against the top bowlers in Division One and overseas bowlers will stand me in good stead".

"Selectors would like to offer their congratulations to Mark Stoneman and Mason Crane who thoroughly deserve their opportunity in the squad".

"He's a great character and was a big part of our dressing room to beat South Africa". "He would have known that and been disappointed", all-rounder Stokes told Sky Sports.

Jimmy Anderson and I haven't bowled as well together as we did at Old Trafford for a while
I think at one point Jimmy had conceded 11 runs in 10 overs and my first seven went for only nine

However, England's new-found confidence in picking two spinners - as they did at Lord's - means Crane could be in line for a trip to Australia this winter, especially if he is given a chance against the West Indies at some point.

Tom Westley, number 679, retains his place in the squad while Chris Woakes returns to the squad and could displace the unfortunate Toby Roland-Jones, who has impressed in his brief opportunity as an global seamer.

He is not certain to play at Edgbaston, where the timing and pink ball is likely to favour the seamers, and his first-class record is modest - 70 first-class wickets at nearly 42 runs each. He might have easier opposition but quite awkward conditions to make his mark in the day-night Test.

If you go to the subcontinent you need two spinners and maybe three in the squad, so at that stage maybe Dawson will come back in but I can't see him playing too much Test cricket in England.

He's only played a couple of seasons of first-class cricket and that's an bad lot to ask making the step up to Test cricket.

Alastair Cook (Essex), Mark Stoneman (Surrey), Tom Westley (Essex), Joe Root (Yorkshire, capt), Dawid Malan (Middlesex), Ben Stokes (Durham), Jonathan Bairstow (Yorkshire, wk), Moeen Ali (Worcestershire), Chris Woakes (Warwickshire), Toby Roland-Jones (Middlesex), Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire), Mason Crane (Hampshire), James Anderson (Lancashire).
