Police officer wounded in New York City responding to call

NYPD officer shot in Brooklyn: Police

Police sources told the newspaper that the gunman appeared to be carrying a rifle, but the weapon has not been officially identified.

The officer, assigned to the NYPD's 75 Precinct, was responding to a call for an emotionally disturbed person on Ridgewood Ave in the Cypress Hills neighborhood. It began when a woman called 911 telling the dispatcher her son was acting erratically but he was not violent, was not armed and she needed help. She claimed her son was unarmed.

The officer was treated by the medics with him, police said.

Officer Hart Nguyen, 30, who was shot in the standoff, has been serving the NYPD since July 2015.

De Blasio said the wounded cop had a "great attitude" as he lay in his hospital bed and even made light of his situation.

Mayor Bill de Blasio has been briefed on the shooting, according to a tweet from his office.

"What could have been just another day, just another call turned into something much worse", the mayor said. "Our officer is going to come through it, he's a courageous young man, he's going to come through it".

Police rescued the alleged shooter's mother from the house and then surrounded it along with state troopers and K9 units.

Police say the suspects sometimes displayed a gun. The officer did not return fire, O'Neill says.

Officials said Nguyen's bulletproof vest kept him from suffering injuries that could have killed him.

The officer was brought to Jamaica Hospital with non-hazardous wounds.

Nguyen has been with the department for two years.
