Kenya: incumbent Uhuru Kenyatta declared victor of general election

Mahama commends Kenyans for peaceful election

Provisional results released shortly after the polls on Tuesday suggested Kenyatta, in power since 2013, was the victor by a substantial margin.

The constitution gives the electoral commission seven days to announce results; in 2022, it may be wise to resist the pressure for news and declare only those results which can be backed up by a publically available, online copy of form 34A.

President Kenyatta, 55, is a wealthy businessman and the son of Kenya's first president.

At least four have died this week since the vote as a result of violence thought to be related to election protests. "One can conclude they [electoral commission] are not keen on taking our concerns seriously", Musalia Mudavadi, a senior official of the National Super Alliance (NASA) and former Kenyan vice president, said.

However it has been endorsed by worldwide observers.

"The process is still underway".

In the Commonwealth's post-election statement, he said: "We believe that the election has been conducted in a transparent and credible manner and that Kenyans must be commended for that election".

"We are exhausted of being ruled by Kikuyus", said Wycliffe Onyalo, 25, referring to Kenyatta's tribe, which has dominated politics since Kenya's independence from Britain in 1963.

Kenyans are awaiting results following opposition allegations of vote-rigging. The opposition stance immediately raised concerns that protests by disappointed supporters of Odinga could lead to violence. With tensions as high as they are, there are fears of a repeat of the ethnic killings that followed the disputed 2007 election, which left up to 1,500 people dead.

But Odinga added: "I don't control anybody". What is happening is that people just want to see justice. "We want to go back to work".

The Chairperson of the AU Commission is in contact with regional leaders and other members of the global community to ensure a coordinated and effective support to efforts aimed at preserving peace, security and stability in Kenya and upholding the principles of the rule of law and democracy, according to the statement.

Violence broke out this week in some opposition strongholds in parts of the capital, Nairobi, and elsewhere while most of the nation remained calm. But people were returning to their daily routines after the national holiday on Tuesday, and some businesses were open.

Global observers on Thursday praised the handling of the election, with the European Union mission saying it had seen no sign of manipulation despite opposition complaints and scattered protests.

Marietje Schaake, head of the mission, said the European Union would provide an analysis of the tallying process in a later report. The commission says a hacking attempt failed. In 2013 their presidential candidate Raila Odinga said the poll had been rigged and lost his case at the Supreme court.

Commission chief Wafula Chebukati said Wednesday he did not know whether the system had been hacked but vowed to investigate the claim.

Provisional results show President Uhuru Kenyatta with a lead of 1.4 million votes as he vies for a second and final five-year term.
