Disney to launch streaming service by 2019 when Netflix contract ends

Is Viacom, Inc. (VIAB) a good buy?

That same year, Disney plans on launching a branded direct-to-consumer streaming service.

Disney said it will launch an ESPN-branded streaming service in 2018, and a separate Disney-branded streaming service in 2019. Despite Netflix's growing popularity with TV and film lovers, aided in part by original series such as Orange is the New Black, Stranger Things and Riverdale, this move from Disney will act as a serious blow for Netflix whose shares have already dropped by 4% since the news.

Its Amazon Channels service has pre-empted the carving up of content, offering a place where you can stream dedicated channels from the likes of HBOGo, MGM, cult United Kingdom distributor Arrow Video and the Discovery Channel. The deal followed an earlier agreement that exclusively licensed Disney movies during the pay TV window from Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel Studios, and Disneynature. Although it was revealed by the company's CEO Bob Iger that Disney maintained a good relationship with Netflix, it was their decision to create an option to take all its contents from the platform.

Disney is looking to start their own streaming service, which means ANOTHER fee to watch your favorites.

While there aren't many details about Disney's direct-to-consumer service-including cost, what it will look like, or what will happen with Marvel and "Star Wars" content-some analysts are optimistic on the services potential, mainly because of its content. (The existing Disney Movies Anywhere only lets you buy movies directly.) Disney has always been a master at controlling its own film availability to stoke consumer demand. While no one else now has the IP might of Disney, we are already seeing this stream-based channel approach adopted by Netflix's other big rival, Amazon. The company is now paying out over $1.5 billion to own 75% of Bamtech - the video distribution company created by Major League Baseball that is working on building both streaming services.

The survey also said a new enforcement and compliance regime and increased digitalisation have reduced cash use for transactions. Industry bodies CII, FICCI and Assocham also hailed steps taken by the government to resolve the "twin balance sheet" problem.

Netflix had and lost Disney content before, in 2011, which it was receiving it via a deal with Starz. These announcements from Disney and CBS suggest that process is well underway.

Disney's cable networks, such as ESPN, make up the majority of the company's earnings.

This is not Disney's first attempt to go directly to the consumer.

Disney and ESPN are walking a bit of a tightrope here, because they have to balance the legacy TV business with this new direct to consumer streaming OTT model during this transitional phase.

"The more content that consumers can obtain without a multichannel video subscription, not to mention more and more content without advertising, the less interest they will have in subscribing to the big multichannel video bundle", he wrote.
