Ask a Trooper: School Bus Stop Arm Fines

Bus Drivers Prepare for Back to School

A person who disregards a school bus stop arm commits a Class A Infraction and could receive a maximum fine of $10,000.

The process of becoming a school bus driver requires at least 14 hours of classroom training, at least six hours of on-the-road training and passing numerous written exams and a driving test, the Daily Record reported. The four hour in-service training day is an annual requirement for all school bus drivers.

District officials said bus changes will begin next week. Each year the Indiana Department of Education gathers information from school corporations for stop-arm violations on a set day. Just a couple weeks ago, he says, he ran into one of his old students.

"When you see a school bus, pay attention to those lights". That's the positive thing.

We place an enormous amount of responsibility on our school leaders already by asking them to take our children each day and mold them into future leaders of our community, let alone the daunting task of making sure they get to school and back home safely every single day.

For many students across our region, the school bus is their primary method of transportation to and from school.

But once drivers are on Veterans Parkway, which has a grass median, they must stop only for a bus going in their direction.

Drivers who illegally pass a school bus and are seen by law enforcement can be pulled over and issued a moving violation.

Moore said a route plan promised for the start of the school year was not ready when school started in Martinsville on Monday, August 7.

"We want people to focus on their driving, be patient, and slow down in school zones", he says. If it is not a divided road, even if it's a four-way street, drivers must stop. After the bus comes to a stop, red flashing lights are activated, a stop arm extends and motorists need to stop a safe distance from the bus.
