Russia's Kaspersky Lab to recall application to European Commission in Microsoft case

Kaspersky drops anti-trust complaint – here's what Microsoft did to appease them

The Russian antivirus company Kaspersky Lab has dropped its antitrust complaints against Microsoft, over the USA software giant's treatment of third-party security tools in Windows 10.

Additionally, Microsoft said it intends to work closely with AV vendors to help them with compatibility issues before future Windows updates are rolled out.

In a Thursday blog post, Microsoft's Partner Director for Windows and Enterprise Security Rob Lefferts said the company is "pleased to have found common ground with Kaspersky Lab on the complaints raised in Russian Federation and Europe".

Kaspersky previously complained that Microsoft was using some questionable tactics to de-emphasize the importance of third-party antivirus programs on Windows, while encouraging users to rely on its own Windows Defender security tool.

Microsoft admitted in late June that it does switch off third-party anti-virus software when Windows 10 is being updated, but it insisted it only does it on a temporary basis.

The changes come after months of allegations from Kaspersky over antitrust violations by Microsoft around the anti-virus market. It also claimed that Windows 10 disables rival anti-virus software and enables its own software during upgrades without warning users, and interferes with messages from vendors requesting that users renew their anti-virus subscriptions. "We look forward to our continued partnership with the industry", Microsoft said.

Consumer Reports stops recommending Surface mobile devices
Within the Surface product family, Microsoft also sells the Surface Laptop , which features a traditional clamshell laptop design. Microsoft disputed the study, saying the company's return and support rates differ significantly from the Consumer Reports study.

"We are grateful Microsoft is addressing these issues completely", said Kaspersky's blog post, attributed to Andrei Mochola, vice president of consumer products.

Kaspersky made a complaint to the Russia's Federal Anti-Monopoly Service (FAS) last year, and to the European Commission and the German antitrust authority in June this year.

Mochola said Kaspersky has a "long history of cooperation with Microsoft" and is "satisfied with the changes" the company will make in its upcoming update. They will also make the release schedules more visible and certain, allowing devs extra time for testing.

All good moves it would seem although I am a little concerned about allowing the third party software to push their own notifications relating to the expiration of their software on an end users system.

"We appreciate the feedback and continued dialogue with our partners and are pleased to have found common ground with Kaspersky Lab on the complaints raised in Russian Federation and Europe", he added. Users would also receive unambiguous communication as to what security application they were turning on and the consequences of that action.

Microsoft had denied breaking any laws and said that its goal was to help protect Windows 10 customers from cyber security threats. Microsoft said that Windows customers should expect that the compatibility issues for their preferred third-party antivirus software should be resolved before receiving a new Windows update.
