Trump 'appreciates' China, Russia backing on North Korea sanctions

UN Security Council unanimously adopts tougher sanctions on North Korea

The United Nations Security Council voted Saturday to enact tough new sanctions on North Korea over its continued pursuit of long-range missiles and nuclear weapons.

Moreover, it subjects nine North Korean individuals and four entities to asset freezes and travel bans. China accounts for at least 85 percent of North Korea's trade - up from a year ago, despite North Korea's provocations and subsequent sanctions.

In a resolution adopted unanimously, the 15-member body strongly condemned the DPRK's ballistic missile launches on 3 July and 28 July, which the country has stated were of "intercontinental" range. And soon North Korea will have the capability to launch a nuclear missile.

The country's only remaining worldwide ally, China, voted in favour of the resolution this time around, despite their ties with North Korea.

"What we have to do is everything we can to pressure this regime, to pressure Kim Jong-un and those around him such that they conclude, it is in their interest to denuclearize", he said.

North Korea has repeatedly said it will never give up its nuclear arsenal, which it sees as a guarantee of its security.

"Today the Security Council has come together to put the North Korean dictator on notice", Ms Haley said who also added "North Korea's irresponsible and careless acts have just proved to be costly for the regime".

China has suggested the USA and South Korea halt joint military exercises in exchange for a halt to North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile testing.

The latest word is that the United States hopes for Security Council vote on the new sanctions Saturday.

"If they had nuclear weapons that can threaten the United States, it's intolerable from the president's perspective", McMaster told MSNBC's Hugh Hewitt.

What has China done to curb North Korea's nuclear ambitions so far? But he urged Pyongyang to cease activities that might further escalate tensions. With the U.S., Japan and South Korea expected to push for stronger actions against the North, a verbal showdown looms.

Susan Thornton of the Department of State Pacific affairs and East Asia said the U.S. is continuing its campaign to intensify pressure on the regime. "China and Russian Federation for effective implementation of the UNSC resolution", Abe said in a statement published by the Japanese Foreign Ministry.

Iranian vice-minister Ebrahim Rahimpour said in his speech, "The Iranian people, who remember the DPRK's honest help and solidarity to Iran when it was in hard times, will fully support the struggle of the Korean people at all times". "It is rapidly growing more risky", Haley said. Washington has threatened to exert trade pressure on Beijing and impose new sanctions on Chinese firms doing business with Pyongyang.
